About the Artist

Mary O’Connor is a native of Wexford, studied design in DIT, Dublin, was awarded a Residency in Kilkenny Design scheme for young Designers. Following this, she worked as an interior designer in London and New Zealand.

Art College in Auckland opened her eyes to the world of contemporary art. In 2000, Mary moved to Belize in Central America, where her brush flowed with tropical inspiration. In 2003, she moved to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Inspired constantly by the events of day to day life, vast landscapes and infinite white winters, over eleven years O’Connor got to know Central Asia intimately and at the same time observed her adopted homeland as an outsider.

In 2009 she took out her camera, The result, a series of books of photography, Head over Heels and Chai and Chat, Central Asia through the eyes of foreigners. Thankful for having spent over a decade in this fascinating region, O’Connor has recently returned to live in Ireland. Her work can be found in many private collections worldwide and public collections including: Office of Public Works, work selected for the New Government offices and for the Environmental Protection Agency
